Opening Our Eyes to Our New Surroundings (A Sunday Stroll)
We were finally able to get out for a hike last weekend. The idea was to get out sooner, but obligations forced us to put our noses to the grindstone and sort out or living space. Also, the rain has a way of lulling us into our warm home. So, we put up with two months of painting, prepping, unpacking, and working until we finally had a free weekend.
Our first expedition was to the Lime Kiln trail in Granite Falls. The trail begins with a gradual upward slope from a small dirt parking lot. Continuing on will lead to walking a medium sized trail through the trees that opens up to views of the Stillaguamish river to one’s left and a lush hillside to the right. Flowing strong with opaque swirls of white and jade, the Stilly was raging through the valley. It holds promise of productive fishing days to come later in the year. I will have to be patient and dream of calmer tides where the fish can more easily feast on all types of winged inhabitant.
While the weather was not “ideal,” the scattered rain and chilly temperatures were a perfect opportunity to try out Nicole’s new windbreaker. It performed flawlessly. Rain on our parade was welcomed with warm smiles as we walked the hillside taking in the sights both low and high. Both Beaver and Lizzy were elated to weave themselves to and fro, from puddle, to bush, heel to parental heel.
A fork in the trail brought us to a rocky shore, where a sweeping view of the river unfolded before us. This shoreline was an opportune place to reflect. Or, in Nicole’s case, capture the beauty of our surroundings. Two drops in water elevation occur here. Hopefully, we’ll be back as soon as the water calms. This point would be a perfect spot to picnic for a few hours and wet a line to coax out a fishy friend for a picture and a short goodbye.
I’m coming back for you. Know this. prepare yourself. I assure you, our time together will be brief, and I will commit you to memory as I send you back into the water winding in front of me.
